Inspiration Healthcare (AIM: IHC) has turned the usual development pattern for small medical technology companies on its head. Normally young companies are cash-hungry as they spend time developing their product and seeking regulatory approvals. They then have to build a sales and marketing structure so they can start generating revenues. Inspiration in contrast already has a profitable distribution arm and is now looking to push its own products through that pipeline.

The company was co-founded by CEO Neil Campbell back in 2003 on £10,000 capital. It began by distributing critical care medical products, particularly for neonatal use. This model meant that it tended to generate cash and didn’t need lots of capital to grow. Sales hit £9.5 million a couple of years ago and the decision was taken to accelerate the growth rate by reversing onto AIM through acquiring Inditherm, a small manufacturer of warming products mainly supplied to the healthcare sector...
